“This is what happens when large companies become involved in health and their wealth becomes a larger priority.” – unknown
Dangers within our healthcare
There are so many health trends flying around the internet nowadays. There are also equally as many health professionals that overlook a holistic approach to health. It makes it extremely hard to determine who you can trust, and don’t even get me started on companies… Let alone keeping up to date with the newest trends/holistic practices ranging from diets and health supplements to lifestyle changes. Large companies are often driven by wealth rather than your overall health and well-being. They always have a ‘new’ product that they can give you for your problem, however, the said benefits are either not received by the client or are beneficial but come with numerous side effects. You can’t seem to win… It’s time to stand up to these companies, self-educate and learn more about the holistic health and wellness options that are out there and rising in popularity.
After the last two years of re-evaluating your lives and being isolated because of the pandemic, there has been a huge influx of people focusing on holistic and natural health and lifestyle options in 2022. People are starting to question regular medical treatments and turn to more natural options where possible. Being nurse trained in both holistic and conventional medical practices I can see how this is both good and bad from a personal and company perspective. But first, we need to understand what holistic health is and its components.
Is it a trend or a lifestyle?
It is actually neither. Holistic health is the practice of looking at an individual’s health as a whole. Health is often defined by the media and companies as one generic term, when in fact there are many components that make up an individual’s health. This means that health problems, much like an individual’s health and well-being are complicated with many layers to work through. My perspective is that many health care professionals nowadays are too focused on providing conventional medicine due to it being easier and quicker, when in fact it’s often not and comes with many more side effects than alternative treatments. Often health care professionals focus only on the symptoms or specific problem that the client is presenting with. By doing this they overlook any other factors that could be contributing to the said problem or symptoms hindering client healing. They are only providing bandaid solutions. This is where natural and holistic health care professionals can step in and explore an individual’s components of health to greatly improve client health outcomes.
The components of health
There are 6 main components that make up your overall health.
1. Physical health (we all know this one)
2. Mental health (and this)
3. Social health (mostly only understood by health professionals)
4. Emotional health
5. Spiritual health
6. Psychological health
The last 3 listed are ones that more and more people are starting to explore this year, which is fantastic! I’m not going to explain each of these components in detail in this blog post but if you would like to learn more leave a comment and I can discuss it in a future post.
Changing my focus to more holistic health treatments and less conventional medicine.
Me, like many others out there, have opted for a more holistic and natural lifestyle which is reflected in the work that I do. Not only have I started my own online coaching business but I have also begun learning more about the variety of holistic health treatments that are out there, and boy there are a lot! I started to change my focus to holistic health treatments when I began seeing clients return again and again with the same or new side effects from medication. I have been in the patient’s shoes. I’ve been given this and that for a specific problem that only helped that issue, not the root cause. This bandaid perspective on health really annoys me and makes me sad that this is the path that healthcare has gone down. There is minimal mention of any alternative medicine in healthcare courses it is mainly focused on conventional medicine. This is why I started my holistic health coaching business, to help people identify the problem, create a plan, and work on a solution to manage or treat many health problems.
The amount of growth that I have seen within this holistic health niche makes me so excited for what the future of healthcare will look like and that I get the opportunity to become a part of this transition.
